We moved to Charleston to be close to our youngest daughter, and the city has stolen our hearts ever since. After more than 30 years of traveling together, we can honestly say few places combine history, food and pure Southern charm quite like the Holy City, and almost all of it is best seen on foot.
This isn’t a list of every attraction in town. It’s our Charleston: the walk we take visiting friends on, the places we go for sunset, and the restaurants we keep going back to. Lace up your comfortable shoes; here’s how we’d spend a perfect day.
Quick tips for active travelers: spring (March–May) and fall (October–November) are the most comfortable months to explore; summers are hot and humid, so plan walks for the morning or evening. Wear supportive shoes: some streets and sidewalks are uneven and cobblestoned. And if your feet give out, a pedicab is never far away (more on that below).
1. Start at Waterfront Park and the Pineapple Fountain
Begin by the harbor at Waterfront Park, home of Charleston’s famous Pineapple Fountain. The pineapple is a long-standing symbol of Southern hospitality, and the fountain is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Grab a bench swing on the pier, watch the boats go by, and ease into Charleston time.

2. Wander the Historic Charleston City Market
A short walk inland brings you to the Charleston City Market, a string of open-air market sheds stretching several blocks. Browse local art, Lowcountry snacks and souvenirs, and don’t miss the sweetgrass baskets, handwoven by Gullah artisans using a tradition passed down for generations. On Friday and Saturday evenings for much of the year, the Night Market adds local makers, music and a lively atmosphere.

3. Stroll King Street
King Street is Charleston’s main street for shopping and people-watching, lined with historic storefronts, boutiques, galleries and cafés. Take your time, pop into the shops that catch your eye, and work your way north toward Marion Square for the evening.

4. Catch the Sunset at the Citrus Club
Our favorite way to end the afternoon: drinks at the Citrus Club, the rooftop bar at The Dewberry hotel overlooking Marion Square. The views across the rooftops and church steeples at golden hour are spectacular. It’s popular, especially on weekends, so arrive early for a good spot.

5. Dinner: Our Two Favorites
Rue de Jean is a classic French brasserie that has been a Charleston favorite for years: warm, lively and perfect for a relaxed dinner after a day of walking. It’s just a short stroll from Marion Square. Our can’t-miss order: the Shrimp Provençal.
Allora brings coastal Italian cooking to Charleston, with a beautiful rooftop and a gelato window that’s hard to walk past. Ideal when you’re in the mood for pasta and a glass of Italian wine.

6. End the Night at the Dueling Pianos
If you still have energy, head to John King Grill & Dueling Piano Bar, just off King Street. Two pianists take requests and play everything from classic rock to sing-along favorites. It’s a guaranteed fun night out. Check their schedule ahead of time, since shows are typically on weekend evenings.

Tired Feet? Hop in a Pedicab
One of our favorite Charleston secrets for active travelers: the bike taxis. Pedicabs and rickshaws roam the downtown streets, especially in the evenings, and they’re a fun, easy way to get back to your hotel after a long day on your feet. Just ask about the fare before you hop in.
